Even though i myself would hesitate to do this, i really liked to see this; i feel its nearness more

I like this one bettter than the first - I am not a fan of cropped flowers, unless maybe it is done for a macro effect. I would clone out the insect (ant?) and the few spots on the petals. I would aslo crop a bit more off the right to get rid of the distracting bit of leaf on the right side. My 0.02¢ FWIW.

Is it just me or does the flower seem weird coming from the side? Is it really falling down from the side and not standing straight up in real life?

Frequency, the 1st picture just explodes with vibrant, bold color, as that what it's all about. A little too soft focus on the central bud that jumps right out at you since we're so up close and personal. Now with the 2nd picture; the original, you really nailed it as a floral composion. The background of dark greens and black only serve to focus our attention on the flower with it's vibrant colors. Also your decision not to use the 3rds rule, seems to really work well. Nicely done.
