Fly shot with DIY snoot for on board flash

Today I put together a DIY snoot for my on board flash and old 50mm mounted with my FD to EOS converter.

This is a fairly heavy crop but one of the best of the bunch

I think my biggest issue with the lighting is it is still a little too harsh, perhaps a little thicker material for more diffusion. using two layers of paper towels now.

Would love to hear your thoughts, thanks for taking a look!

Interesting! How big is the end of the snoot.. and how close does it get to the subject?

Quick edit ...pulled some yellow out and toned down the contrast.

See if you can get some white nylon (rip stop) if they have it..... it is better than paper towels Paper toweling tends to go yellow, and you need something that will go softer

Nice edit Mully, yours is a little less "over sharpened?" than mine is. I will check into the nylon for sure

You have an external flash, yes? Get one of these > Fotodiox 6x8-Inch Softbox for Nikon Flash, Canon Speedlight, for Nikon: Amazon.ca: Electronics ... Larger light source, better light. I even went to Amazon.ca and got the right link for you....

I'll definitely check into that, I wanted to do a DIY just to play around with the idea a bit, it's great to know there are such inexpensive options out there!

IMO if your investing in a mini softbox, pick up a pair of cheapy wireless transmitters as well (CBS). Without a bracket your softbox wont direct enough light downwards, and in my opinion the flexibility of using OCF with sensitive insects or very well hidden ones beats out any clumsiness it entails. Try squeezing a big snoot setup between a couple close branches without disturbing a fly and you'll see what I mean. Before I moved to That setup, I just used the built in diffuser and reflector card on my speedlight and combined they bounced just enough light down onto my subjects. Captured plenty of well-received images That way.

On a second note, be careful with the linked diffuser. The threads sewn into it are oily and result in brown lines where they press against the diffuser screen when folded for storage. I still use mine, but ill buy a different brand next go around.
