I would raise the exposure about 1.5 stops.

Looks a little "fuzzy" to me. Do you need to increase shutter speed?

@WesternGuy, was just messaging OP and it looks like these shots were done manual focus as the AF has gone out on his lens.

I'm getting better at handheld panning and manually focusing at 300 mm.
Will add some more examples on Flickr later this week.

You will be far more successful with manual focusing if you can shoot on bright sunny days and be able to use f/8 or 11 to try to achieve a "zone of focus" rather trying to nail the shot at f/5.6 which leaves you with an almost zero depth of field to work with. This may also be an area where (depending on your camera) increasing your ISO will help you get to a higher shutter speed.
