Still not following entirely what the plan is............

.........As a suggestion for another test, you could place a test object centered in the frame, next to a ruler that extends away from the camera (parallel to the lens barrel). The you could pull your best focus on the test object, and then see on the ruler where the plane of focus actually fell.

I'm not testing for backfocus, or comparing exif focus data to actual distance.

If you're not testing for backfocus (which I am interpreting to mean "the plane of focus is not actually where the AF system, or me+screen, tried to put it") then I am at a loss as to what you're actually testing for. But that's ok, I don't need to understand.
