I use a single focus point, generally 1/3 into my frame depth wise. From experience I may adjust this if my subject is unusually close since I want to hit hyperfocal on my lens and have everything in focus. Its not unusual for me to be at f/16 or f/18 full frame.
This is what I was going to say.
Screw carrying around charts and all that... just set your focal length at ~f/11, focus on something that looks roughly 1/3 of the way into the scene, and take your shot. I've found that 95% of the time this works for me, and if the photo doesn't work, it's unrelated to lack of sharpness.
When choosing your "1/3 focus point", try to target something with strong contrast if possible, as that helps the autofocus system do its job.
