Focus Stacking with Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM

Hello group,

I just got my Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens, and I am doing a bit of experimenting with focus stacking. I feel sort of stupid because I cannot figure out how to use the lens to focus on different areas of the same shot, without changing the focal distance. There is only one ring on the lens, when I turn it, it always changes the distance to the object. All I want is to focus on different areas of the object, without changing the distance. I am missing something vey basic here...can somebody help me out ?

Put the lens in manual mode for focusing then keep the camera in one spot and move the lens to focus at different spots then stack...
