Focus Zones

I have a Nikon D200 and I'm confused by focus zones. I'm not sure what dynamic area/closest subject, group dynamic, dynamic area auto and single area autofocus mean. I have mine set to single area, but I'm not sure if this is best for taking portraits, landscape, etc. I have read the manual but I'm still confused. Thanks for any help.

They are called focus area modes. Each focus area mode is designed to be used with a specific focus mode. Focus mode and focus area mode are different auto focus attributes and you have to select one of each.

The D200 user's manual explainations on page 54 are pretty clear and concise, but I'll try to amplify what the manual says.

Single area is for portraits, still life and landscapes. Use with single focus mode (AF-S)

Dynamic area mode is used with continuous focus mode (AF-C) for action sports, and moving subjects.

Group area mode is a broader version of dynamic area mode and continuous focus.

Dynamic area with closest subject priority is pretty much self explanitory.

Split the manual in small sections and read one at a time. Obviously you have the Internet so when you don't understand a term do a search online. I guarantee you will find an explanation for pretty much everything, in the camera manual, online!
