focusing question

i am having trouble focusing on multiple subjects,cant seem to get everything in focus...i know i have to use a high aperture number like 8 or 11..some where around there...a few questions? where should i keep the focus point at? the center?... and also the metering mode..what exactly is that used for?

Focus about 1/3rd the way into the frame. There is more DOF behind your focus point than in front of it.
