Food Photos

Hey all,

I got to do a food photo shoot for a pastry chef at a restaurant in New York this afternoon. It was a lot of fun and very delicious one because I got to try everything

If all goes well one of these photos might be used in a European food porn magazine which would be my first time being published in print.

Mint Julep

Mango, Rhubarb and vanilla panna cotta with milk foam

Blood orange, Gianduja and chocolate orb

Poached rhubarb, vanilla panna cotta, mangosteen and champagne foam

Assorted Macaroons

CC would be great on these.

I've never attempted food photography, but I think if I did, I'd go for softer shadows than what I'm seeing here.

Yeah, plates look good but too bad about the shadows.

The shadows on the first two look too harsh to be apetizing to me.

In fact, all of those dishes look too damn strange for me to ever try.

I actually quite like them. And would try everything on that page. 1 and 2 are my favourites.

Thanks everyone. Ill be going back next week to shoot the rest of the menu. So any suggestions would be welcome as I will have a chance to try again. The magazine the chef wants to be featured in tends to show food in very dramatic lighting. That is why I tried lighting them this way. Ill try some shots trying to contain them when I go back next week.

Dave- The food was delicious. The second plate was my favorite of the ones I tasted. The orange and chocolate one was awesome too. The orb was half full of chocolate and hazelnut mousse carmalized blood orange and chocolate pop rocks. It was insane. When served the server pours hot chocolate sauce lightly on the orb revealing the cavity within.

Google "scrim" and go from there. You have a ways to go too, for the image captures are just the start. There's a lot of post work that needs to be done on food photography.

Thanks, I did. And I agree that I still have a lot to learn, There always is. Right now I only have one speed light, a reflector and a light sphere. Maybe i can get the effect of a scrim if i put a few pieces of tissue paper inside of the light sphere to soften the light more.

What things would you do in post in addition what I have already done?

Not when you shoot film ...there was no post then and you had to nail it in the lighting.

Untrue. You still had retouchers. I remember those days well. : ) ....but yes, you still had to nail the lighting.

Wow I see what you are saying. I had another try with processing. Looks like I have a lot of work to do on all of these. This is the second time I have had the opportunity to shoot some food like this. So your advice has been rather enlightening. Thanks.
