For my Mom

I am giving my older D90 to my mom for our upcoming trip. I want to know what would be the best wide for her, shell be getting a 16-85 along w/ it.

Well it all depends on how much she knows. If she is like my mom who dosent know why she has to look through the eye piece or dosent know how to turn it on I would just give her the widest range lens you have.(16-85 is good). But unless she is really into photography then I would give her a limited ammoumt of lenses because she probably won't want to spend all the trip trying to figure out the correct lens.

I am thinking that, and one good wideangle. I like the Tokina 11-16, but is the 12-24 any better?
