Of the former Soviet Union lenses one of the most praised 50s is the Industar-61 LD, a very sharp lens.

I got my copy of a Jupiter-8 & pitted it against my Industar-61 LD on a G1. Let folks judge for themselves.

1. Industar-61LD @ f4

2. Jupiter-8 @ f4

I took a crop of the upper right corner of each - Industar on left:

They were shot at minimum focus distance, the Jupiter actually focuses a bit closer than the Industar.

To me, it looks like the Jupiter is a smidgin sharper than the Industar. But it's practically a photo-finish.

Never heard of either of them. So, I looked them up. Sounds like it was decent glass even though not made in Japan or Germany. I don't own anything with a screw mount. What gets me is the L- stands for slightly radioactive Lanthanum in it. Hope the L in Canon doesn't mean the same.

Both seem to be performing quite decently, especially at minimum focus distance. Both are probably optimized for a distance of at least 100 times the focal length.
