Been off the forum for a bit, hope I didn't miss too much. Really love the photo of the year and the latest photo of the month.

This is just for fun, but critiques welcome. Taken at the Phoenix Renaissance Festival.

I haven't been taking too many pics lately. I'm rather low on gear as I've recently had a few uninvited guests over.

Oh, that explains why he doesn't look too real . I so like Renaissance Festivals, as does my daughter who can't wait for the next one to be nearby, she's already planning on what to sew as her costume - and the one near here will only be at the beginning of September!

The dappled bright light is your enemy here; the bright spots pull attention from his face, as does the bright background and the OOF hand and cross.

You shot at f 3.2 and Iso 200 whereas you could have easily jacked up the iso and used a smaller aperture and gotten the cross in focus.

It's odd, but before I even read the caption, I thought "this doesn't look real". What's odd is... why? What does a "Friar" look like? It's just a person, yet, for me, this photo had a red flag all over it.
I wonder if reversing the focus would have been more powerful. Crisp focus on the cross and the "Friar" slightly OOF.

Yeah, this could have been done better. Actually, when I posed him I didn't realize how dappled the lighting was. I tried versions with both in focus and with just the cross in focus. Didn't like them as much. Part of what doesn't look right, I think, is the result of darkening the image a bit to get the mood that I was looking for. Guess it didn't work so well, given the reactions. (that was what I wanted to know in posting the shot).

My kids really enjoyed the RenFaire, so I'm looking forward to going back when it comes to LA in May. Saw lots of photographers doing portraits at the Phoenix RenFair. Looked like fun. I spent 90% of the time with one of the twins on my shoulders with the camera uselessly dangling.
