C&C as requested, but from someone who doesn't do portraits though (so I won't presume to comment on what I don't know). I do have a comment in regard to your B&W conversion -it needs more contrast and/or to be lightened up- the whites of his eyes are very grey, and the image appears flat. You caught a neat expression though.

The focus looks ok. Why did you crop so tight? The top of his head is cut off and his chin has no room. The DOF looks good, but what is going on in the lower left corner?

I like the POV and the background. Cropping is great as it gives the face gravity. As mentioned before I would do a little bit of curves adjustment. Would make a great shot to hang in the kitchen.
