What you will get is no image outside the size of a DX sensor. The D700 has a feature to use DX lenses but you basically crop your usable sensor size doing so. Get a FX lens.

Trever1t has it only partly correct.

You can turn the DX crop feature off, but, a DX lens still projects a smaller than full frame image circle so some portion of the resulting full frame image will be vignetted. How much vignetting occurs will vary by which DX lens and the focal length used.

You really should read your D700 users manual.
