I would get the body first and get lenses later myself. Too expensive for the lens, a f2.8 24-70 cost around $2k...that's 75% of the D700. If you buy everything at once, that's like 5k already. The other way works too, get FX lenses first, than get the body. But IMO, get the body than the lenses.

I would argue that an excellent D300 giving you 10mpx if excellent quality out of your DX lenses while you get an FX lens collection has more utility then spending twice as much for a body that has significant limitations on megapixel count.

But really this is each to his own. I'm going down my path, and I'm getting cranky at one of my friends who has a D700 and constantly wants to borrow my lenses.
