What's new

Gardeners! Share your garden photos and garden chatter here.

You're lucky to get this service. I have access to free compost here in my little city, made from our own leaves and lawn clippings they pick up curbside - but it's a hassle to get a worthwhile load back to the house by car and they don't allow your own landscaper to get it on your behalf.

I'll nose around some more.

After a cold rainy day yesterday we're back in sunshine and warmth. Up and down, up and down - it will level out in a matter of days now.

The Maryland county had free mulch but you had to haul it. I haven't seen anything like that here.
Cloudy, low 60s, and rain is supposed to start in a few hours.

The rain slacked off for a bit. Playing with an old 135mm Nikkor that @pixmedic gave to Lazy Lobster a number of years ago.

Lilac

The big lilac and a neighboring cedar (from a couple days ago). There is one dead trunk but theothers are quite alive. We want to find a way to move it away from the house (and overhead wires) , hoping it fills out.

Nice pictures with that lens! :)

Any chance of a hard pruning instead of trying to move it?

Our city offers free compost also but yes you have to haul it yourself. I would use it but some people in our local garden group reported seeing what looked like Japanese knotweed growing in the compost pile. I won’t risk it. Also those jumping worms have made their way into some gardens in our area and I’d like to avoid those as well!

Busy weekend for me in the garden and around the house. When I wasn’t helping Princess paint her room pink, I was planting trees, digging up giant rocks, moving plants outside and scattering seeds everywhere!

Bought a small pink dogwood, decided it was too small for the intended spot out back so I went out and got a bigger one… kept the small one for a different spot in front. Planted both this afternoon.

Small tree planted out front. It’s a bit close to the house but many homes around my neighborhood have large dogwood trees as foundation plants. They’re gorgeous. I’ll be long gone by the time it reaches its full size and becomes a potential issue. 🤣🤣🤣

The “larger” tree , still only about 4’ tall when planted.

Princess got me these 2 new clematis for Mother’s Day. I got one of them potted up today. The other is going in a bottomless pot under my obelisk trellis but I haven’t had a chance to cut the bottom out of the pot yet!

A few things in bloom but it’s still early days here in New England. Most perennials are still working on foliage.

I love the color of this woodland phlox

You have more flowers than I do!

Well, I'm improving at any rate. And - the Major Wheeler looks like it's ready to grace the yard with blooms soon! This will be the third full summer, so it's time. It's been a tricky one.

Every clematis I've planted has died. Every.single.one. I only had one spot to give and they all hated it. I have a climbing hydrangea in there now, and it's happy and healthy.

Yeah, they did. A couple warm days, I guess.

Clematis do tend to disappear if planted in the ground when too small. They do really well in pots on the patio or deck and are just so pretty! I have several in large plastic nursery pots sitting inside a heavy ceramic pretty pot. I get the 6’ varieties and add a small trellis and let it wrap around. In winter I wrap the inner pot in burlap and put it back in the ceramic them tuck it either against the foundation or under the deck.

My Asao clematis has the prettiest blooms! It’s still small but I’m expecting it to out on some height this season. I may have to get another of these for the front yard.

This is very clever - it gives you the freedom of placement every year, too.

I wonder if any would make it in my unheated garage over a Michigan winter. We had 3 separate Polar vortex events over the winter - it was sub-zero temps for a couple of nights each time. 🤔 I should check various zone tags the next time I'm at the nursery.

Both the Major Wheeler and Scentsation honeysuckle plants are pretty tough. I've struggled with clematis.
