What's new

Gardeners! Share your garden photos and garden chatter here.

Can't wait! I love seeing the monarchs flitting around the yard.

I lost one of my swamp milkweed plants last year, but the one across the yard is coming up nicely. I planted 2 more last week and will now have a decent grouping.

I planted a couple more bee balm plants, too - it's been rainy and chilly this week. Once this nasty weather system moves out I'll start getting some pictures of my recent plantings.

We've had a cold, wet Spring around here! It's been hard to assess everything with our wild temperature fluctuations. I can hardly believe Memorial Day weekend is upon us!

I'm not familiar with ninebark, but after reading up I've added it to my list of candidates for planting on the east side of the house.

Here are a list of other plants you can use to stabilize the bank as well, if you want some variety.
  • Willows (Salix spp.) – Excellent for erosion control and wildlife habitat.
  • Red Osier Dogwood (Cornus sericea) – Thrives in wet conditions and helps stabilize soil.
  • Cattails (Typha spp.) – Grow densely, filter pollutants, and prevent erosion.
  • Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) – A vine that helps bind soil and provides food for birds.
  • Lobelia Cardinalis (Cardinal Flower) – Adds beauty while supporting pollinators.
And there's always kudzu. :biglaugh:
NO, NO, NO. KIDDING, KIDDING KIDDING. DON'T DO IT.

I have some irises to plant, and the two little junipers. I think I'm going to put the junipers on the slope behind the garage, and the irises aroung the big rock. Lazy lobster transplanted the hibiscus tree to a real pot, yesterday. White leaves, I guess from the cold since we put it outside too early. There are some green shoots so I guess it's OK. I'm leaving it inside for a couple more weeks. I need to build a little wheeled cart/table for the pot so it can be easily moved in and out, and the cat can't get to the leaves.

MLW got a hydrangeo from someone at the office but I think it may have died, although there are still green stems, the flowers are dries (normal) and the leaves (not so much_. I put the pot outside and watered it hoping to pull it back to life. We'll see.

Lazy lobster used one of the small planter boxes on the deck. I think tese are peas. If yo look in the background, the trampoline, left by the previous owners, is gone! The stick pile is on ash, so I guess an older fire pit. We will put in a proper one and burn those. For now the sticks are placed there so I don't mow over them.

My freeloader will be home from college in a few weeks lol. But I managed to get the whole yard distributed on my own without too much effort. Actually I could have used 1.5 yds…ran out before I could top dress the roses. I’m going to have to supplement with some bags. Although the bunnies have been working overtime making Harlie’s favorite meatballs in that area.

Smart pills!

Here, have some Smart Pills.
Ach. Those taste like $#!^.
See; you're getting smarter already.

I need to get a few things planted before we head back on Tuesday, and I want to install one of the flagpole holders in the front. There was already an old one (brass) on the back deck but I'll put a second one out there, I guess. If the overhead lines weren't so close to the house, I'd put up a proper pole.

Oh, apparently we have rhubarb in the back yard.

It’s been freezing here. We are in the midst of 3rd winter and expecting a nor’easter this afternoon into tomorrow! I covered the herbs and peppers last night from the cold. Just an upside down pot on top with a small stake to hold it in place. Hoping for the best with the rest. My roses are just about to burst with blooms and I’ll be sad if they get damaged by all the wind and rain expected today. Trying not to think about the 45 Dahlia tubers that I planted on Mother’s Day and that have not broken the surface yet. Hopefully because they’re raised beds they will drain well enough that they won’t rot.

Last year, I left the milkweed plants alone over the winter and occasionally would grab a handful of seeds off one of the pods and throw it around the butterfly garden. I have so many new milkweed seedlings coming up!

Irises and Juniper in the ground. I'm not sure the Juniper area gets full sun. so they may need to be moved. I know nothing about planting Irises, so we'll see. I left the shoots/leaves above the dirt for those root pieces that have them.

A robin was out getting garden hackles (earthworms) and grubs from where I stirred up the mud, yesterday.

A neighbor gave me some irises last year when she was dividing. I divided them into a few plants but left this one clump as a corner anchor.

My understanding is that they do like the sun but also they like a damp environment.

MLSIL has some in MD. I picked the perfect spot. With all the rain we've had, the ground in "the bottom" is saturated.

What a view! Great backyard, Bear.

That's a great idea about the milkweed - now that I have three, I'm not as concerned about losing them to deer and I'll try that seed-scattering trick. Awesome!

I was looking at AccuWeather radar a few minutes ago because it's getting dark here - looks like your nor'easter is breathing down your neck. Fingers crossed for the new plantings!

Here are three of my volunteers, a black willow, a Korean mulberry, and Lurch, a sunflower from the feeder… note the yardstick for an idea of Lurch’s height..,

These look great! I don't have the real estate to handle a black willow, but I love them.

You'll have to show us pics of Lurch in full bloom! He's already towering over everyone there.
