Getting started... (equipment and learning material)

Hello everyone! I'm new here...
I'd like to start studying photography as an hobby (though in a serious way).
I've got a compact sony camera (digital) and old analogic Olympus OM10. I'm going to start with the olympus becouse i can't adjust the settings of the sony... do you think is a right choise?
How can I learn? Is there any great book famous among you photographers that you could advise me?

What about the camera? How much is better to spend for starting?

Pick either Nikon or Canon and get the most expensive one you can afford. Can't go wrong that way.
