NEW YORK: Getty Images, the biggest distributor of pictures and video in the world, agreed Monday to sell itself to the private equity firm Hellman Friedman for $2.4 billion, including debt.

It's a fabulous business. I was going to make an investment in a catalog rights management company, but it didn't happen. One thing I learned is that there's a lot of room left for growth, as well as consolidation. The last time I checked (several years ago) the two big players (Getty and Corbis) only controlled a combined market share of 24%, the rest distributed amongst hundreds of smaller companies. I think it's changed somewhat, but it's still a good business to be in.
