I picked up a couple of good books at the used bookstore the other day.
"Photography In Print" edited by Vicki Goldberg
75+ essays, excerpts, and articles about photography from 1816 to 1980
"Alfred Stieglizt Camera Work, The Complete Photographs" published by Taschen
Both of these are excellent books if you'd like to learn a little about what has come before. If you think image manipulation and what people are doing in Photoshop these days is anything new these books will blow your mind.
