Google Ad Words

Hi folks, a lot of people on here have advocated using Google Ad Words for drawing traffic to a website. I recently signed up for an account with Google Ad Words. So, can someone with some experience tell me a little about how to use it efficientlly? I have had a couple hits as a result but not nearly the estimate that Google gives when you type in the keywords in the setup. So, is there a way to improve performance other than better keywords? Do I simply have to pay more?

There are a lot of things I don't understand about using the internet so if anyone has some easy tounderstand guidance it would be helpful.

Seriously, I recommend buying a book on this. It's a complicated thing.
