I would be interested in knowing how this lens performs in lower light situations.....ie does the IS allow a slow enough shutter speed to shoot indoors, not so well lit situation.

I have been debating this or the F2.8 version for some time.....lots of dollars between the two.

Congrats on the new lens...cant imagine you wont be happy with an L series anything.

IS is virtually useless for sports photography. IS compensates for you hand shake allowing for slower hand held shutter speeds. It will not freeze motion. That requires high shutter speeds in the area of 1/250.

bottom line is why not buy it if you can afford to. I am applying basic logic here for my situation. I thought the $400 extra would be worth it if the IS got me one or 2 shots I would have lost. I am not trying to say I have money to burn but my budget was 1k and I got the IS for 1k. I could have got not IS and another lens but I decided to get the best thing for what I wanted to do.

ON that subject is it work it for me to get a lens that equals the kit in a 2.8 such as a tamron or sigma, will the difference be that noticeable?? I am an EXTREME novice

IS still has many uses - it makes the lens walkroundable very well and is a bonus to have - if it had no use people would not spend the extra for it

As for a new smaller focal range lens - which ones were you thinking of? The canon kit lens is not that good - by standards of what canon make.

IS is always nice to have! If you don't need it you can turn it off but there will always be a time you can benifit from it and then it's worth the extra$$

I've found this link very useful for comparing lenses ... you can see what is done with the lenses you're interested in. I love my Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 as a walkaround lens ... a bit wide to a bit tele ... wide aperture for dark situations ...fits the bill wonderfully and not too heavy or obtrusive.
