Graduated Density Filter - Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens.

Just curious about using a graduated density filter and started looking into what I would need. I see how the square filters allow you to move the filter up and down to position the filter along a specific horizon line, but how does the screw on filter work in comparison?

Wouldn't you have to compromise and change the composition with a screw on since you cannot keep the lens in the same position and then move the filter up and down like the square filters?

For the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens, I would need the 52mm filter, correct?

Every round grad filter that I've seen, has the transition in the middle...which practically forces the composition of your photo.
I don't like that, I'd much rather use the rectangular filters and choose my own composition.

The filter size of a lens should be written right on the front of the lens, and probably on the inside of the lens cap as well.
