The flash in the first and third is a little strong for my taste. For situations like this I would pay attention to the ambient lighting, the open shade is nice but watch out for using too much flash to overcompensate for the lack of light or the hot spots behind your subject. You could up your iso to brighten up that background so you're not isolating your subject so much with the flash (unless that's what you were going for ). I would get the flash off the camera myself to add more depth to the shot, but that's just my two cents.

I absolutely prefer ambient lighting, but I thought I owed it to myself to learn and work on using flash. I've been getting a lot of slack on blown backgrounds and the advice I've been given so far has been to light up my subject to not overexpose the background. Yes I did smooth skin..

Get the flash off the camera and pop the power on it up at least another half stop.

I think photo 2 has the most potential. The focus looks sharp and I really like the pose. The white balance looks a little warm, but that's an easy fix. I just wish you could've gotten rid of whatever that was behind the graduate's left shoulder.
