Hello there folks. This isn't my first post, technically, as I posted asking some advice about buying lenses for a camera I was researching. Well, I bought it, so I am now the proud owner of a Nikon D5100 with the kit lens, and a 55-300mm as well, so I thought I'd offer a real greeting, since I'm sure I'll be back :D I've got a tripod and bag in the works, as well as a few other accessories, but now I've got the most important part. It's very exciting--though I can't tell my bum from a hole in the ground with this thing just yet. I've taken a few shots just on auto with the two lenses, and I'm very impressed with what I've gotten so far. I can't wait to understand all of this better so I can get the kind of photographs I want.

A little about me: I'm 24, and I live in Phoenix; I will be moving to northern California in a month and a half, and that was the major impetus for getting a new camera. I had been using a fujifilm S5000, which is basically a fancy point and shoot, but just couldn't get the kind of shots I really wanted. My knowledge of photography is basically "if it looks cool, take a photo" and while I seem to have an eye for that kind of thing, I've never had any control over how the photo actually came out. I'm looking forward to gaining the knowledge to be able to make the photos come out how I want them to, and not how the camera wants them to.

I enjoy taking photos of many different things, but I primarily take photos while hiking through many of the beautiful places I have been; this means my photos range from semi-macro (very interested in learning more about this!) to wildlife to landscapes and sunsets. I didn't know how demanding this range of photography is before...but now I know, and I can't wait to learn as much as I can.

So...there is it. I'm a brand-spanking-new aspiring photographer who is very excited to FINALLY have a nice camera! I've got a few photos posted in my gallery, all of which were taken with the Fujifilm; I can't wait to upload some with my new toy!

Cheers,
-JN

Head for the Desert Botanical Gardens! Lots of neat stuff there for a photo-nut. I've got some friends who live in Phoenix and I try to make it out there once a year or so to see them. It's a fantastic place with no end to the photographic opportunities. Have fun with your new camera.
