Greetings from yet another noob

Greetings from sunny Southern California. I've very recently graduated from being a hopeless amateur with point-and-shoot pictures of my dogs, my friends, holiday snaps, etc. to being a slightly hopeful total amateur. Several years ago I fell in love with someone who really knows what he's doing and he's been a bad influence on my wallet when it comes to photography. He's taught me to appreciate the value of capturing better, sharper images and thus getting a bit more than the moment. I've just begun to learn about my first SLR and have invested in some online training.

My primary method of learning has been reading then doing and screwing up and occasionally, miraculously getting a gem or two. I'm a computer geek so I can do a fair amount of post-production manipulation but my hope is someday to be able to get a lot better quality from the original image.
