I just signed up. I am an old guy in southern California. I was a pretty good photographer using 35 mm film format. I shot Minolta slr's and leaf shutter rangefinder cameras. A few years ago I went to digital starting with a Minolta Dimage. Now I have a Nikon D3100 that I haven't used much. I am on a Facebook group for photographers but we don't talk much, just show off our pictures. I am getting my eye back and am getting out of the auto habit. I still have a Minolta Maxum 35 mm camera with a 28 t0 80 Rokor zoom on it. On my D3100 I have the kit lens 18 to 55 zoom and I have a 55 t0 200 Nikkor zoom. Both good glass but slow. That cuts into the ability to use aperture for creative reasons.

Welcome to the Forum.

Welcome!

Don't dismiss those "kit" lenses out of hand, as I think they're pretty good for the money.

If you want to get into faster glass, I recommend the 50mm f/1.8 G. They are pretty good, and you can find used examples in good condition for not a lot of money.
