Justin Kohn, 32, biology major holds two Gromphadorhina portentosa or Madagascar hissing cockroachs that the department has in their labs. Kohn said that these, despite popular belief, are a flightless breed of roach, and explained to curious students that they primarily eat dead and rotting vegitation. You can also tell the difference between males and females by looking at their ppronotum or forward shell, as the femals have a smooth shell and the males have a series of bumps or ridges.
