I a chance to play with what I see is the best mirrorless camera in the market the Sony A7R II
As a DSLR user I was really intrigued how this camera compared to my D750,
Test was very brief but I did came to 2 conclusions even from this small test

1.I like the feel and size of the camera even though I wish it was slightly bigger
2.AF is surprisingly good in lower light but still not as good as my D750

I guess my main interest was to test how well the AF will focus in lower light, it worked fairly well but I found it was hunting much more then the D750, still this was very low light situation but for me it means if I ever will move to mirrorless it will need to have a much better and improved AF system.

Well theres two technologies right now which would stand a chance:

Canons Dualpixel. Instead of just single pixels, ALL pixels on the sensor will be sensitive to the lights phase. The problem of course is how do you read this much data so you can use it for AF.

Panasonics advanced Contrast-AF. Requires detailed knowledge of the lenses used. Computes the misalignment of the focus from the degree of blurr, then moves the focus accordingly.

But yeah, for the time being, DSLR is still the autofocus king.

How did you get your hands on the full frame mirrorless? Adorama is taking pre-orders for mid October release. 3 grand...oouch

I saw a dPrefiew test of the Sony A7-ii...with the fast 35mm f./1.4 lens, autofocus in it was better than any Nikon or Canon in very dim, indoor light; the KEY though as they pointed out very specifically, was the fast-aperture lens. The f/1.4 aperture was a required part of the exceptionally good AF performance. The Nikon D810 was so bad it could not even make the video's final cut.

The lens on it was an 18-35mm I think f4, I will be honest I didnt really look into the lens but the owner told me the lens info.
As for the Sigma lens f1.4 perfomance, I guess you might be right but with that lens it wasnt too impressive and went a long the line of the feedback I saw from Tony Northop which said in lower light it tends to hunt a bit.
Still it was a very impressive camera but I wouldn't replace with with the D750.

I think you’re mistaking it for the new a7S II. The a7R II has been out for probably a month or so, and costs $3,200—which, if it’s as good as advertised, is no steep price at all, considering the Canon 5DS is more expensive.

I played with an A7R a bit ago and was blown away. Other than the EVF, I would LOVE one for landscape work I think.

No doubt for some applications the A7R or A7R II are excellent options, I think landscape is one of them, sport cameras not so much.

As for the Sigma lens f1.4 perfomance,
Derrel was clearly talking about the Sony Zeiss 35mm f1.4; the Sigma 35mm f1.4 is much cheaper and a DSLR lens, and as far as I've checked reviews on the net, so far no DSLR to Sony FE adapter has any tolerable AF performance on Sony FE.

To my best information, apertures below f2.8 do not affect AF performance on Nikon DSLR in any positive way anymore.

Sorry my bad I meant Zeiss and not Sigma.
