A couple nights ago I was hired to photograph a fashion/ hair show put on by a Portland salon that's re-branding itself and the clothing boutique that shares the building with them. The clothing boutique is owned by and features designs by Portland designer Sarah Donofrio, who was a contestant on Project Runway Season 15 (unfortunately she didn't win). The hair and makeuo was done by my friend Rainblo ( Rainblo- Headshots ), who works at the salon. At one point I asked this model to step next to a window so I could get a quick headshot and detail shot of her hair, and I got this shot which is my favorite from the night. The sun had already set outside but there was still some soft dusk light coming through the window. Because the available light was very limited and I wasn't using a flash, I had to shoot with a wide aperture and got a very shallow depth of field. While I would normally want to get both eyes in focus and have a wider depth of field, I love the shot regardless and feel like the shallow depth of field gives it an interesting dreamlike feel that doesn't necessarily detract from the image. Using a speedlight in my opinion also would have killed the mood or the photo.

Anyways, I'm blabbing so here's the photo. EOS 5D Classic, EF 85mm f/1.8 set to f/2.2, 1/250th sec, ISO 800.

Looks like she has a bright future in boxing promotion! Haha sorry had to.. i like the expression! Almost like a glare you would receive after my snide comment

That's wonderful. I love when that happens, a spontaneous moment that you know to give something a shot (literally!) and there you go, a really nice photo. I think it's a matter of knowing what to do when the opportunity is there, which obviously you did. I sometimes get my best stuff on the fly.

I don't remember who you mentioned from Project Runway but I'll have to go look her up. Sounds like a job that's right up your alley, have fun with it.

Thank you. Same, some of my best work was very spontaneous.

I think the shallow DOF works great here. I don't like her hair though, and that is why I'm not in the fashion business! LOL
You have really been hitting them out of park lately! Great work. :1219:

Impressive and dramatic portrait. Background color works well too.

Thank you. There was very little done to change it from what the camera captured. A little bit of dodging on the skin to clean it up, and a curves adjustment was made on a curves adjustment layer set to "luminosity" blending mode.

When it comes to this sort of thing, you have no control over what you photograph. I just make sure the lighting, posing and editing look great, and the stylists take care of the rest. Had it not been an event I would have had a say in the hair, but honestly I like it.

Thank you!

I have no fashion sense at all!

Get some more gay friends!

Get some more gay friends!

I have two, but they are in Colorado, and one of them has less of a fashion sense than me! LOL But I am in the middle of nowhere Kansas, and this area is very VERY religious! So if there is anyone in the area that is gay, they probably don't let anyone know. I wouldn't blame them either, I am very liberal and I don't even tell people that. I am planning on being out of KS (and the country) in less than 2 years. :)

I like the way the background colors compliment the hair and makeup. Pinky purply tones, the model looks girly and cute but not super glammy and not fake looking at all. The natural texture in the hair is really refreshing, if the soft puffs in front were sculpted into a more geometric shape it would have changed the whole feel. The look makes the model seem real and down to earth (maybe even young and sweet), but the shape of the style is still very strong and deliberate (especially around the sides and back) so while it looks slightly aloof (in a great way), it doesn't look like it was an accident. I agree with you about the dreamy feel from the sallow DOF, I think it's cool.
