Since we like to spend a lot of time out there in the summer I feel I'll be giving this another go with some OCF as well.

IMO, this is too difficult to parse. By the time I figured out he was sitting in a little fabric enclosure and you were shooting though the window, any impact was gone.

Suggestions? Go wider? Forget the fire and have just him in the tent?

I was laying in the grass about 30 feet from the fire, not shooting through a window. Used the ground and my elbows as a tripod. I was shooting at something like 1/40, f2 @ ISO1600.

I don't have a problem with the comp. I like the shot actually. But yes I think it could be stronger. Was there a light source behind him? I feel like I want him to be illuminated by the fire, since that is so important to the story. And instead he is being lit from behind with hardly any light hitting him from the fire. Hope that makes sense.

It was that little enclosure thing he's in that made it confusing for me.
My children are grown and I had to look a bit to figure out what it was, why the window was irregular. It just got in the way.

This is my thoughts exactly, I like the shot and it sounds like you will have opportunities to try this again, perhaps a well placed warm light source to mimic the fire on his face will work?

I thought this was great when I saw it on the Facebooks. I didn't have any problem getting the comp, however I agree with others that slightly wider and may have helped a bit.

I grabbed it pretty quick, and the first impact that went through my mind is "she could be hanging out with her family by the camp fire, but instead she's in the tent playing on a tablet. Why is she staring at a screen when she can stare up at outer space?

It was cloudy, a bit chilly, and he wanted to go inside. My wife and I wanted to stay out a bit longer. So we asked him if he wanted his car tent. He was only on there for 20 minutes or so.

Also, he isn't so much the "dirty" boy. He enjoys dinosaurs and science much more.

Oh, he is in a tent, looking at a video screen.

I didn't get that at all.
Perhaps the audience has to bring a lot of familiarity with children's toys to this.
I need simpler stuff.

Yeah. That's why I can agree that going a bit wider would have made the tent more apparent. I can see now that if you have never seen one that it would not jump at you.

Thank you and everyone else for the critique and thoughts to ponder.
