I am at work right now so I cant try it but has anyone shot smoke with the SB600 or that type of flash still ON the camera as opposed to mounted off camera?

It will only work if you have no background. Meaning you are outdoor with no wind to mess up your smoke and your background is far far away that your strobe wont lit it.

The strobed light has to be kept off the black background if you want the background to stay black so there is a lot of contrast between the background and the smoke.

Plus the detail in the smoke would be flatter looking if the smoke is lit from a light on the lens axis.

In short, you could do it, but it wouldn't look very good.
