I like #3 best. The first one is nice and sharp but too square and centered. The 2nd is okay and the 4th doesn't do anything for me. If you search some of the other threads there is one that gives lots of links to tips on rule of thirds, composition, etc. Good luck and enjoy your semester abroad!
 
Personally,
I really dislike poles. In the first picture, the person has a pole sticking through his ear. #2 is alright, as the pole sort of "makes the picture" as her ponytail is going over the pole... #3 poles everywhere. No offence, but #4 made me sort of dizzy...

In my opinion - #2 and 3 work best.
