HELP installing a Katz Eye split-prism focusing screen!

My brother gave me a Katz Eye split-prism screen for Christmas (after I drooled over his) and am having some trouble installing it on my Canon Rebel XT. I have tried it twice and my viewfinder is not showing proper focus at all. I mean that when the image is aligned in the viewfinder, the photograph is completely out of focus. When I allow the camera to autofocus, the image is completely unaligned in the viewfinder (but an in-focus photograph results).

I initially thought I might have installed it backwards but I tried the other way and it still isnt working. Any ideas?

There might have been shims behind the original focus screen ... make sure you leave those in place and put the new focus screen on top.

Did you guess your way through it or follow the instructions online exactly? I know someone who installed this following the instructions at the Katz Eye website in his Canon with no issue what so ever.
