Hi guys, my old Samsung GX-1S has given up as for some strange reason doesn't like to work in my hands anyone else s it does! im confused lol. anyway I was thinking of getting the Nikon D3100 but then my dad gave me the idea of the Nikon 1 J1 but then said the Olympus PEN E-PM1 for £280 with 14-42mm and 40-150mm lenses but then i seen the Olympus PEN E-PL3 for £300 with 14-42mm lens. now i don't know which to go for I have held the Nikon 1 and PEN E-PL3 and i hardly put the PL3 think its the PL3 but no one near me has the PM1 so guys which would you recommend i buy? I will be buying a lens adaptor for my300mm Tamron lens so i can use it on the camera i buy. Ideally id like to buy the camera tomo. i will be using it for all sorts holiday, Motorsport, landscape and general learning of photography.

The PEN series from Olympus are Mini (E-PM#), Light (E-PL#) & Standard (E-P#). They all share the same sensor and AF system (within each generation), it's just a matter of size and features that fits your needs. I was looking to get one to reduce size and weight of my Nikon gear. I was afraid the smaller ones were gong to be too small, so I went with the E-P3 and absolutely love having it. It came with the 14-42mm kit and I bought the 40-150mm at the same time. Later the 45mm f/1.8 came out and it is sharp as a tack. The lineup of lenses for the m4/3 is really coming along with top shelf gear from both Oly and Panasonic.

I'm actually renting the OMD E-M5 next week with the new 12-35mm f/2.8 and 75mm f/1.8 to see if I want to upgrade the body. Keep in mind that the crop factor for the m4/3 is 2x, so those two lenses are equivalent to a 24-70mm and a 150mm FF lens. I doubt I will sell my D700, but the D300 may go up on the blocks.

This may help, but YouTube is full of other videos.

MODS: another thread for Micro Four Thirds. Is anybody listening? Perhaps that sub-forum, please.

Hey thanks for that i went for the E-PM1 I will take time to get used to it. gonna be looking at getting a spare battery, filters and 1 or 2 lenses. now can you recommend a lens for macro and one for distance? wont have much to spend on teh lenses so depends how much one will cost if i can get 2

A spare battery is a must have accessory IMO.

If you're talking about UV filters for "protection", I don't use them. There are several threads on TPF discussing this. Judge for yourself.

Olympus has released a new native 60mm macro lens and is availible for pre-order from B&H. $500USD. Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens V312010BU000
