Help repairing tripod (DIY)

Hi guys.

A buddy gifted me a cheap digital concepts tripod with a broken leg (yeah my photography vocabulary sucks i know, I'm Costa Rican and i'm still learning english). A picture's worth a thousand words:

(excuse me for the bad quality, picture was taken with an iPod in extremely poor lighting conditions)

Tripod is stable when Standing up and is still usable but I wouldn't trust it with my life and it can only achieve a medium height

Is there some kind of DIY fix for this? I still haven't got my camera but I want to repair this before I buy it. I'm a student and can't really afford to buy a new one so it's kind of an oportunity to have it...

I'd say any fix you're gonna find is more expensive than the tripod even in working order.

No better than the tripod looks (quality-wise), you're better off not extending the legs to maximum anyway.

Duct tape and a rubber tip from a crutch or something else.

Yeah I was thinking in that but I was wondering if someone had a more creative fix...
