help with picture idea

My wife carved a pumpkin that i really like, its of a doberman. So my idea is to have our doberman sit beside it tonite while lit and take a few photos of them together. Id like to get some ideas on settings, or just how to make the photo better. Using a Nikon D40 with the kit lense.

You may need to take two separate pictures that way you can get a lighted picture of your dog and maybe photoshop the pumpkin in so that you can get the glow.

The only post processing software i have is the Nikon program that came with my camera.

try GIMP its a freeware very much like photoshop. only problem i have with it is it is a little more complicated that photoshop.
