Hello, I just registered. I've been seriously trying photography now since the end of January so I'm very new but I want to learn and realize its a long process.

I enjoy landscapes/nature most of all. I doubt I'll ever really do any portraits unless its of a pet so I'm trying to gear up toward the types of shots I want to take.

My question - regarding the use of graduated neutral density filters.

I have some on order but I have never used one.

What happens when you have a subject at the line where the filter turns transparent? Do you usually tend to see a darker subject? An example - this shot has a post in the foreground extending above the horizon line with the sun rising/setting.

This must be a filter or composite images - but wouldn't the top of the post be darker if this we a graduated filter?

Yes the top of the post would be darker if a GND filter was used.

Actually, the top of the post does look darker to me.

Hopefully you ordered the rectangular filters, not the round ones that screw onto the front of a lens.

Correct, I ordered rectangular.I got a 1 stop hard, and a 2 stop soft just to get started. I'd like to order a reversing grad ND filter but none seem to be in stock anywhere.

Yes you are right it would. I'd say that picture is made from multiple exposures
