Two years ago (2016) near where my wife grew up in the Gaspe Quebec, a beaver dam broke & a small lake rushed down the mountain. It washed out Hwy.132 around the Gaspe forcing traffic to be diverted through the province of New Brunswick.
The Beaver lodge that once sat well out in the lake now sits high & dry & the beavers were no doubt swept down the mountain with the water, as no restoration of the dam has been attempted since.

Dead trees indicate where the lake existed.
