Hike up Grouse Mountain

Our PE class went to Grouse Mountain for the Grouse Grind Hike. I, of course, brought my camera along for the ride. Here are some pictures. They were mostly taken to show you how big the hike is. It is up the whole mountain, and it goes up 2800 feet, or 853 metres. I completed it in 50 minutes. Record = 26 minutes, average time = 1.5 hours.

Great shot of the grizzly!! Im glad you are still around to post it. How far away was it? I once saw a brown bear from about 100yards and froze in my tracks. A dog came running around the corner barking at it though and scared it off before I could get my camera to take a shot. Odd huh that a small dog scared off a bear.

Nice! I was just up there last Christmas (near then, anyway)...it's so beautiful up there! I took a lot of pictures myself.

Well, I wasnt very far away from the grizzly, because it was not totally wild. It wasn't in a cage, but it was still fenced in. I guess I was about 30-40 feet?
I took it at 55mm if that helps you estimate distance.

First of all- congrats on your time. Great hike. The photos are great. I do believe a small dog could scare the bear away- mine could for sure- JRT- meanest thing on 4 feet!

Excellent shots. The bear one surprised me. So what kind of fence are we talking about... I didn't think that a simple fence would deter a bear. Congrats on your time... surely it would have been better had you not stopped for the photo ops, but I for one am very glad that you took your camera.

I've been up Grouse Mountain...I tried to hike up but I had to turn back and take the gondola up. I later found out that I had previously broken a bone in my foot while playing hockey. Hurt like heck.

Megapaws, it was an electric fence, and it was born and raised there so it didn't have intentions of breaking out. I also happened to be standing on top of the wooden fence so I could see above the electric fence.

All four of these are nice, but I particularly like 2 (the view through the trees back down to the lake) and 3 (lovely play of light and shadows). That walk was quite steep in parts, I can tell! :shock: You must be in really good shape!

They all remind me of the pics I am working on in PS right now (a little), i.e. those my son took during his classtrip to Norway. I hope I can make him join this forum soon so he can present some of his pics. They went on long hikes there, too.

Your shot of the grizzly is great.

Aren't bears magical critters? Three years ago in alaska, I was hiking up to Harding ice field on the exit glacier trail, came around a corner, and was 75 feet from a black bear with two cubs. THAT was fun. I wish i'd had a good camera at the time.

Also, on the bus that runs through Denali, a grizzly with three cubs approached the bus!!
