On page 120 of your manual, in the Tech Notes / Specifications, it says your flash sync is 1/500s. Oh joy, no really, that's good if I read it right. I know the D70 also has a flash sync of 1/500s, but most Nikons are at 1/200s or the newer ones at 1/250s.

D40: Flash X-Sync: up to 1/500 sec

If use off camera radio trigger (non-ttl) or non-ttl flash, D40 sync speed can go much higher because of the electronic shutter in D40 (I think D50 and D70 are the same as well)

Actually, because of the electronic/mechanical shutter hybrid, it can do up to it's max shutter speed.

we have fluorescent, incandescent, and flash light available.

And now LED too!

Also, continuous lets you see exactly what you're going to get before you snap.. in terms of shadows and balance etc.

So does flash if you use the modelling lights
