How can I achieve this type of light? (Picture In Post)

I've always been interested in how one would be able to do this without adding an awful lot of dust or smoke to the equation.
How would one go about being able to get the streaks of light coming from the bullet holes? I've also seen this done with windows as well. Is it something to be done in post?

There has to be something, like dust, for the light to reflect off of, unless it is done post process using image editing software.

I bought an inexpensive fog machine that creates a very stable and colorless fog that it creates from a fog solution you can buy by the gallon. I would say experiment with something like that. You can control how much fog comes out by how long you hold down the release button. Find a buddy to help you out with the fog. Set your lights on the other side of whatever you are going to use and test it till you get what you want.

The fog machine I bought was $29 and it comes with a pint of fog juice. That would be way more than you will need to figure out this shot and then shoot it in several different sessions.
