Seems like some people were having trouble in another thread with understanding how sensors in a camera work. The above link should help anyone interested in learning more about two very common sensors.

It does miss some obvious benefits and downsides to the various technologies though, such as blooming when reading out an image without covering the sensor, the ability to use a "global" electric shutter, and that a large amount of the performance of CCD is based on how well it integrates into the whole package. Buy a CMOS sensor and you get somewhat reliable performance, buy a CCD and you need to move heaven and earth to make it perform as per the (often far superior) specifications. Though I guess they did lump that into the category of "CMOS is cheaper".
