How do I test new lens?

I have a T3i and just bought a new Sigma 17-70 OS HSM Macro "Contemporary" lens to replace the kit lens. I have read reviews online that have complained about a poor quality lens. I took the lens out for a test ride yesterday. It performed flawlessly. (From what I could determine).

Are there tests you guys run your new glass thru to determine that you didn't get a bad one?

I do the same sort of thing as Robin suggested, except I print out a sheet covered in 10pt upper-case 'X'.
