I have to admit, I saw the 2nd picture on a 24 X 36 canvas... and it was incredible. The parents of the subject bought the pic from me and sent it to be placed on a canvas and frame... and it does look impressive, if I have to say so myself, totally different than seeing it on a monitor.
 
Im not so sure it was just tonemapped. The reason why, normally if you take a single shot and just tonemap it, you get halos not to mention an increase in noise. That pic looks aweful clean, really super clean, which leads me to believe that it was a multi image composition.

Halos are a function of the smoothing radius, and the noise must come from the image itself. It is reasonably easy to get a noise free, halo free image when tonemapping a single standard dynamic range shot providing you know what you're doing and nail the exposure reasonably well to begin with.
