I have a 70-200 f2.8 VR2 and AF on it is very fast compare to my other lenses, ie 35-70 f2.8D. I'm thinking about upgrading my 35-70mm due to the slow AF of the older lens. However, I'm not sure how fast is AF on the newer 24-70mm f2.8. I just want to see how it stacks up against my 70-200mm VR2 in term of AF, so I can decide. Anyone out there with both 24-70 and 70-200 lenses that you can compare and tell me?

TIA

:D

So many views, no answer. The 24-70mm has the same fast focus behavior of the 70-200mm f2.8. ;)

I own the older 70-200 2.8 and the 24-70 2.8. Seems pretty darn close as far as speed goes.
Never thought on either lense about speed while using so it couldnt have been a problem

I have both of the new versions... They seem very close to the same speed if not the same. Not sure though, I keep them on different bodies.

It's made for sports and the like... I'd guess the focus is going to be slick on it. I never see anyone complaining about a slow focus on it and if it were you wouldn't see so many sports shooters using it constantly.

I also have and use both pretty much all the time and don't notice any noticeable difference.

there is really no way to test. its not like there is a measurement for this. also what someone says is going to vary on camera set up and what type of body. in reality youd have to have have two cameras set the same with the two lens shooting the same thing at the same time and go from there.

just as a rough estimate.. they are very close in speed. I think the 70-200 might have a slight edge.. but how would you measure it. Even in dim light.. they just lock on! Same with my new 85mm 1.4!

It's confirmed that 24-70mm f2.8 focus speed is about the same as the 70-200mm f2.8 VR2 focus speed. However, the 24-70mm focuses much faster than the 35-70mm f2.8. :D

I have both of the older versions. Both are fast - in fact just half press and "bam" its in focus. I shoot mainly sports and neither is an issue ... I don't ever think about it. They both just snap into focus.

I ever never noticed either of mine is slow, but never cared to race 'em against each other =)

I think bn my 2 glasses af is the same. @ least I haven't noticed major differences if there are any

Selling the 35-70? Lol
