How good is the Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX

I find myself using my 55-300VR more often than the 18-55 kit lens at this time. I enjoy trying to photograph hummingbirds and prior to getting my Nikon D5100, I used a Canon G12 and Nikon P7700. Anyway, those two cameras are gone and I'll learn to capture photos of hummingbirds with the D5100. Today, I managed to take my first hummer photo of this spring with the 55-300 VR...
