How much zoom do we really need?

I used to think 5x zoom was small, but I don't think it really is. I know that it's not the "zoom" per se, but the camera's focal length in mm's that matter, but to me a 30 or 50x zoom is kind of ridiculous. Who really shoots and that distance anyway? I mean to me anything over 18x seems like overkill. Am I right?

I find 4 quarts is usually enough.

I don't know why the zoom ratio of a lens is such a big deal. I'm sure the manufacturers would love to have us believe there's something mystical about it, but all it really is is the result of a simple math equation.

500mm reach is working out pretty nice for me but it would be nice to have 800mm to.

my telescope isn't enough and it's 2,000mm PLUS magnification.
and my 300mm is about 300 to short
