I recently purchased a untested lot of cameras on eBay mainly for fun and a chance to get to use cameras I never used before. I seem to get a lot of hate comments about me using old cameras but its just for fun folks, am I not entitled to have fun with old cameras? I don't understand some people. It's just a hobby for me and I love experiencing new cameras nad quirks that they have.
Anyways I digress, one of the cameras I was excited about trying was this Canon Sure Shot Auto Boy 2 with a 38mm f/2.8 lens. I seen some really good photos taken with this camera and I was excited to give it a try. I was surprised how well the camera worked, the viewfinder is amazingly bright and large with clear markings. The auto focus system is kinda poor as you have no idea what it is actually focusing on. It does show a little slide in the OVF of like a mountain to a close up of a head but none of that seemed to matter much on mine because half of the photos weren't even in focus!
This has to be one of the most noisy cameras I ever used. It's really really loud, I swear my neighbors could hear it when I was out taking test photos with it! I even published a short video on YouTube showcasing how loud and annoying the rewind is on the camera.
Using the camera was a positive experience, very point and shoot like. No settings to adjust except for turning on the flash which only consists of popping it open. There is a pre focus/timer lever which I made the mistake of trying out which I think was ultimately the death of the camera. I had plans on selling the camera after testing and went to do one more final test and the shutter completely locked up on it. Nothing I could do fixed it, I even took it apart and attempt to find the issue but the film advance motor sounding jammed and the shutter would no longer function. The camera is entirely made of plastic and I'm sure due to the age of it, probably something inside broke down and jammed everything up. Who knows but I figured its not worth trying to fix it.
A part of me wonders if the light meter was even functioning correctly because even using ISO 200 film, the photos were very grainy which tells me they were underexposed. Its a good thing that I didn't sell it before giving it one more round of testing because then if it sold and it broke, I'd be upset if I was the buyer so I'm glad it happened to me. Either Way I already broken even on the untested camera lot of bought so it's not a big deal.
It's a cool camera, but not the one for me and I have a feeling they are not the most reliable compact film cameras on the market. I think there are some better versions of the camera out there that are more reliable than this version. Overall it was a cool experience nonetheless.
Here's some photos. I'm bummed that most of them weren't in focus so I'm sharing what I had left that were. I think I'm going to stick with the SLR cameras because at least I'll know what is in focus!
