How to achieve this kind of background?

I love this style, especially the light blue near the bottom. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to making backgrounds look like this?

Looks like colored paper to me.

Those puppy-dog eyes hold a LOT of clues about the lighting.

It is shot on seamless paper and then the periphery is burnt in to create a rather kitsch-y look
